Distress in Castle-Kinneigh

I purchased quite a few microfilm rolls of the West Carbery Eagle to see if I could find any information about my family. I was also interested in learning what was happening in the area where my ancestors lived, particularly in 1880, when my gg-grandfather, Michael Swanton and his wife, Bessie Bradfield Swanton, left for Boston with two of their children, Robert and James. Robert was my g-grandfather. Michael was 65 and Bessie was 60 when they left. I was puzzled as to why they would leave Ireland then, after spending most of their lives there. The articles I found provide a great deal of insight as to why they left Ireland.

I've also included an article from 1865 that mentions a James Swanton of Kinneigh. Michael and Bessie lived in the townland of Boulteen, which just south of Enniskeane. The James Swanton referered to in this article was almost certainly a relative of Michael's. He emigrated to Boston, and settled in Plymouth.
