1. Thomas Swanton was born in Skibbereen, Ireland on November 1, 1855, and died on June 30, 1938 at the age of 83. He is buried in Oak Hill Cemetary, Hammond, Indiana. He married Elizabeth Ann Locke on May 24, 1883 in Grace Episcopal Church, Salem, MA. Elizabeth was born in Cambridge, MA. Thomas called her "Lizzie. She died on December 25, 1940 at the age of 78 in Grand Forks, North Dakota.
Thomas was naturalized September 1, 1883 in Peabody, MA. He emigrated to the United States in 1876. In 1896, he went to Hammond, Indiana and built a glue factory. He lived at one time in Springdale, PA, St. Paul, MN, and Kansas City, MO.
In Hamond, he was Police Commissioner, member of the Board of Public Works and Commissioner at large. He built the American Glue Factory and managed it for 18 years. He was a Mason and an Elk. He went to Turin, Italy in 1914 to construct a gelatin plant, and stayed there for two years. They took their youngest children with them (Emma, John, Bill, and Sarah). In Hammond, Indiana, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, there is a memorial stained glass window to Thomas and Elizabeth Swanton given by John and Winifred Swanton. It is the center front window.
Thomas' certificate of registration was signed by Secretary of State William Jennings Bryant. He retired in 1923.
