Translation of Wanda Muller's letter from Polish to English

Immensen 4/14/1947

Dear Aunt and Uncle and Cousins!

We have to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for this letter and a good, unexpected, big parcel, which we received on 4/3. There is a lot of good stuff in it. When are we going to repay you? I hope that the other one with things will come, too.

You have no idea how much joy this has given us, that you, our Aunt, have not forgotten us. You write, dear Aunt, that you have forgotten how to write in Polish. You still write very well. Tell us why Ksenia works? And what does her husband do? Tell her to write to us in English. My daughter can read and write a little in English. She learnt in school.

I have sent the parcel right away to my grandson. I can tell how happy he was. He kept talking about it. That it was from his aunt from America. And why she's not coming to visit him. He talks mostly in Polish. We have visited Alinka for six weeks. Same bad same bad as here. Everything is rationed. But the location is beautiful. Here the countryside is ugly. We were eating in the kitchen. Now they don't cook, because they have nothing.

We have to suffer all this. To buy bread at the bakery, we have to stand in line from 4:00 o'clock in the morning. This is pure clay, not bread. What can we do, may next year things will be better, we hope.

Dear! I don't want you to spend money, but if you could, supposedly coffee and tea is very cheap in America. I would like some, I really miss those.

Now I want to thank you again, and my husband and son-in-law as well, for those good cigarettes. Here they are rationed - 40 pieces for 6 weeks. And they like to have a smoke.

Why does aunt Hela work in a factory? What does she do there? What did uncle Franus die from? What are his children doing? Did his daughters get married? Are you close with them? She never wrote us back. We live on the English side.

Thank you again for your goodness.

Greetings from far away -

Wanda with husband and children
